GMC was formerly the General Motors Truck Company or the GMC Truck & Coach Division (of General Motors Corporation). GMC is an American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) division that primarily focuses on utility vehicles and trucks. It currently makes SUVs, vans, pick-up trucks, and light-duty trucks. They cater to a premium-based market. In the past, they also produced ambulances, fire trucks,  heavy-duty trucks, motorhomes, military vehicles, transit buses, and medium-duty trucks.

Even though many Chevrolet and GMC trucks are mechanically similar, the latter is positioned as a premium offering to the Chevrolet brand, with luxury vehicles like the Denali series and the electric, off-road Hummer EV series. GMC vehicles are always sold alongside Buick vehicles at multi-brand dealerships in North America.

GMC celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002 and also released a book entitled GMC: The First 100 Years, a complete history of the company. In addition, GMC introduced the Acadia in 2007, a crossover SUV, the division’s second unibody vehicle (after the Vandura), whose predecessor, the GMT-360-based Envoy, was discontinued. At the same time, GM’s Moraine, Ohio plant was closed on December 23, 2008.

GMC ended production of medium-duty commercial trucks after over 100 years in 2009. Instead, in 2018, they became exclusive to Chevrolet with the launch of the 4500HD/5500HD Silverado. Also, GMC introduced the Terrain, a mid-size crossover SUV based on the GM Theta platform shared with the Chevrolet Equinox in 2009. In addition, General Motors announced the return of the Hummer nameplate in 2020, this time as a sub-brand of GMC instead of a stand-alone division. The Hummer lineup includes two models, an electric pick-up truck and an SUV, to be sold as the “GMC Hummer EV.” As per GM, the Edition 1 production electric pick-up truck will feature 1,000 horsepower, hit 60 mph in 3 seconds, and is scheduled to launch in late 2021.
